As a Mom or a Mom-to-be, your time is filled with decision making. Home or hospital? Natural or with pain relief? Breast or bottle? The list is endless. And, within hours of your baby entering the world, you’ll want to put him in a nappy. Ah, another decision: modern cloth or disposable?
Have you ever been introduced to the wonderful world of cloth nappies? If not, let us introduce you.

Lily James is the proud Johannesburg agent for BiddyKins Cloth Nappies and to save you some hassle, we’ve compiled a list of the advantages of cloth nappies.

  • Modern cloth nappies contain no harmful chemicals or plastics which means they are great for sensitive bottoms. It’s a la natural and you can even find organic cloth nappies that are made out of cotton or bamboo.
  • Modern cloth nappies have less of an impact on the environment than disposables.
  • You have the freedom to choose from a variety of stylish modern cloth nappies.
  • Modern cloth nappies are said to prevent nappy rash.
  • Modern cloth nappies come in a variety of colours and designs so can be considered more aesthetically pleasing.

Where to start?

There’s a vast variety of types of nappies, many brand names, some better than others. For ease of use Lily James stocks Pockets, All-In-Two’s, All-In-Ones and our very own flannel and fleece nappies. We decided to stock and make nappies that looked and worked like a normal, disposable nappy, were easy to wash and dry, and also could be used from newborn to toddler-hood or as fitted nappies through each stage of your babies life. Every mom is different and what works for one does not necessarily work for another. You need to find what works for you and your precious bundle. We would suggest getting a few of each different kind of nappy there is available so you can test and see for yourself what works better for you. Believe it or not there is a great demand and platform for second-hand cloth nappies. So it will never be money wasted if you don’t enjoy a specific type of nappy. It is always good to have at least 20 nappies to start off with if you are planning to do full time cloth nappies, this allows you to wash every second or third day. From there you find what works the best for you and your baby and you adjust your stash as needed.

And in all honestly the gorgeous prints available are just irresistible so your stash will definitely grow.

What We Stock:

Our BiddyKins range of nappies have an outer waterproof lining (PUL), are stuffed with an absorbent microfibre insert, and can be adjusted to fit the size of the baby wearing them.

We then have our Lily James nappy range, we are experimenting and hoping to make a great range of affordable cloth night-time nappies. While extra absorbency may work for you in a Pocket, All-In-One or All-In-Two for night time use it doesn’t work for all. That is where we are stepping in to fill the gap. We are still in the testing phase with our nappies so anyone who would like to be a tester for us please give us a shout joanne@lilyjames.co.za let us know your babies size and we will happily let you be one of our testers. We currently have 2 types of nappies, Flannel Fitteds with 3 layers of microfibre sewn into the wet zone, these nappies come with an additional, snap-in, snake insert made from 4 layers of hemp/cotton mix, these need to be used with a cover, you can choose to get a waterproof PUL cover from our BiddyKins range or a Fleece cover from our Lily James range. Our other option is a coral fleece outer, hidden layer polar fleece, birds eye inner with a sewn-in 4 layer brushed cotton soaker, these come with 2 additional snap-in inserts, one of which is a snake insert, these nappies do not need an additional cover as it is built into the nappy. As soon as we have had all feedback from our testers we can put a price on them, as they may need to be adjusted to create the perfect night time solution.

Are They a Hassle?

Put it this way if you start off using cloth you wont know any different, so in that sense it is not a hassel.
If you are changing over from disposables it will take a week or two to get used to. We believe that it just changing your mindset. Cloth nappies couldn’t be easier, just store your soiled nappies in a dry bucket until wash day, you can add nappies to make up a full load add an extra rinse to your washing cycle and viola you are done. Just keep thinking of our landfills and how much you would be adding to them if you were using disposables.

Are they expensive?

Initially, the outlay for cloth nappies and the various accessories can be costly. Not nearly as costly as stocking up on disposables though. A very important thing to remember is majority of the nappies you will buy are OSFM (One Size Fits Most) so you can use them from tiny to toddler size and you can re-use on another child. Good thing they have Nappy Parties for expectant fathers these days. What a great way to build up your stash!! We do Nappy Party Registries for your convenience. That way you can build up an incredible stash to start your cloth journey. If you would like to do a registry with us please email us on joanne@lilyjames.co.za or call Jo-Anne on 0823271417.
